The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has received a major political boost with the entry of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Engr. Babachir Lawal, into the party.
National leader of the NDC, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, announced Lawal’s arrival on Tuesday after receiving him alongside members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and other senior officials.
Dickson described the former SGF as a respected elder statesman whose experience would strengthen the party ahead of future political activities.
According to him, “Today, in the company of members of the National Working Committee and other NDC officials, it was a pleasure to receive and welcome respected elder statesman and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir Lawal, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).”
The former Bayelsa State governor said he appreciated Lawal for identifying with the party and expressed confidence that his wealth of experience would benefit the NDC.
He said, “In my remarks, I thanked him, on behalf of the National Chairman and members of the National Working Committee, for believing in our party.”
Dickson disclosed that Lawal has been asked to play a leading role in expanding the party’s influence across the North-East and North-Central geopolitical zones.
He stated, “I requested him to provide leadership and support in coordinating, guiding and strengthening the party in the North-East and the North Central Zone, as well as provide leadership and support for all our candidates, counting on his experience, leadership and extensive network to further strengthen the party.”
Welcoming the former SGF once again, Dickson reaffirmed the party’s commitment to building a stronger political platform and deepening democratic governance in Nigeria.
He added, “Once again I warmly welcome Engr. Babachir Lawal to the NDC and look forward to working with him and other committed Nigerians as we continue to strengthen our party and advance the cause of multiparty democracy and good governance in our country.”
Babachir Lawal served as Secretary to the Government of the Federation under former President Muhammadu Buhari. His entry into the NDC is expected to boost the party’s presence in northern Nigeria as it continues to attract prominent political figures and expand its national structure ahead of future elections.
