Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has said it is making final preparations to inaugurate its Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) for the 2027 general election, revealing that its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have been given the responsibility of nominating key campaign officials.
The party said consultations are ongoing with stakeholders to ensure that the campaign structure reflects unity, inclusiveness and readiness for the election.
In a statement on Tuesday, the NDC disclosed that Obi and Kwankwaso had held several meetings with the party’s National Leader and other members of the national leadership as part of efforts to conclude the process.
According to the party, the presidential candidate and his running mate will nominate the Director-General of the campaign, Deputy Director-General (North), Campaign Spokesman, Deputy Spokesman, Head of New Media, Finance Director, Deputy Finance Director and several other officials.
The statement added that the party leadership had given the candidates “a free hand” to make the nominations in consultation with the party.
It explained that the Finance Director and the Deputy Finance Director would work with the National Treasurer to manage campaign funds in line with the Electoral Act, stressing that transparency and accountability would guide the process.
The NDC said a full campaign organogram had already been prepared since August and shared with Obi and Kwankwaso for their input. It added that nominations had also been received from stakeholders across the country.
The party said: “The party wishes to assure the public that as soon as we receive the inputs of our Presidential Candidate and his Vice, the NDC shall proceed to announce and inaugurate the same.”
It further stated: “We have also proposed a campaign timetable since August, and we are waiting to conclude arrangements for the funding and fundraising for the campaign, to be spearheaded by the candidates. The money raised shall be paid into the presidential campaign account to be managed by officers nominated by the presidential candidate and his running mate, as well as the party national treasurer.”
The NDC also explained that the inauguration of the Presidential Campaign Council, initially planned for the first week of September, was postponed because of the travel schedule of the presidential candidate.
Calling for unity, the party urged all its candidates and supporters to avoid internal disagreements and concentrate on winning the election.
It said: “There are no battles to fight within the NDC. The common opponent to defeat is the ruling APC. We are committed as a party. The party has done its own and is ready to do more. The candidates and their supporters are encouraged to do the same.”
The statement added: “Our candidates should keep their eyes on the ball and focus on winning.”
The NDC also stressed that all its candidates, from the presidential race to other elective positions, should work together to secure victory, noting that they are contesting on the platform of one political party and not as independent candidates.
The Presidential Campaign Council is the body responsible for coordinating election campaigns, fundraising, media engagement, mobilisation and other strategic political activities ahead of a general election. Political parties usually inaugurate their campaign councils after concluding consultations on appointments and campaign structures to ensure smooth coordination nationwide.
