Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerian editors to remain committed to protecting democracy by promoting accountability, transparency and responsible journalism.
Obi made the call while speaking at the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in Enugu State.
The conference, which held with the theme, _“The Ballot, The Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive,”_ brought together editors and media professionals to discuss the role of journalism in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
In a statement shared on his X handle on Sunday, Obi said editors have a crucial responsibility in ensuring that leaders are held accountable and that citizens have access to credible information before making political decisions.
Obi, who is the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, urged media leaders to use their positions to examine the records, qualifications and actions of those seeking public office.
“Editors must continue to scrutinise the qualifications and past records of those seeking public office, expose past wrongdoings and ensure that the Nigerian people have access to the information they need to make informed decisions,” Obi said.
He also challenged politicians to demonstrate integrity and uphold values that reflect the expectations of society.
“Leaders must exemplify the best values of society,” he added.
During the conference, Obi also engaged participants in an interactive question-and-answer session, where he listened to their views on Nigeria’s democracy and the media’s role in sustaining good governance.
The former presidential candidate thanked the Nigerian Guild of Editors for inviting him to the event, describing the conference as an important platform for discussions on the future of democracy in the country.
Obi has consistently advocated for stronger institutions, transparency in governance and citizen participation, arguing that credible information and responsible leadership are key to Nigeria’s progress.
Concluding his message, he expressed optimism about the country’s future, saying: “A New Nigeria is Possible, and Nigeria will be OK. -PO.”
