Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal
Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has approached the state High Court to compel the government to release the report of the judicial commission that investigated his administration from 2015 to 2023.
Tambuwal, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, filed the suit over what he considers the failure of the state government to make the commission’s findings available after its proceedings.
The case, numbered SS/133/2026, was filed through his counsel, U.O. Sule, SAN, before Justice Mohammed Mohammed of the Sokoto State High Court, Court 6.
The suit names Governor Ahmed Aliyu, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Nasiru Binji, and the Sokoto State Commission of Inquiry as defendants.
Through the case, Tambuwal is asking the court to order the defendants to provide him with a copy of the commission’s report. He wants access to the findings and conclusions reached by the panel after examining activities and transactions during his eight-year administration.
The legal action follows the establishment of the commission by the administration of Governor Aliyu to investigate the activities of the government led by Tambuwal between 2015 and 2023.
The panel was chaired by Justice Mu’azu Pindiga, a former Chief Judge of Gombe State. It was tasked with examining the former governor’s administration and its transactions during the period under review.
However, Tambuwal is now seeking judicial intervention over the continued non-release of the report, arguing through his suit that the findings should be made available to him.
The case raises questions about access to the findings of a government-appointed commission of inquiry, particularly where the investigation concerns a former public officeholder whose administration was the subject of the proceedings.
The court is expected to hear the matter on November 9, 2026, when proceedings will begin on Tambuwal’s request for an order compelling the state government and other defendants to release the report.
The outcome could clarify the legal issues surrounding access to inquiry reports and the obligations of public authorities in handling the findings of investigations into previous administrations.
