Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has called for improved welfare and better support for Nigeria’s armed forces while honouring the late Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor (rtd.).
Obi made the call on Friday in Awka, Anambra State, where he joined other Nigerians to celebrate the life and legacy of the retired senior military officer and diplomat.
The former presidential candidate described General Obiakor as a distinguished officer who served Nigeria with commitment both in the military and international diplomacy.
Obi said the late general contributed greatly to national service during his career in the Nigerian Army and later served as Military Adviser at the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
He said the life of General Obiakor represented the values of sacrifice, patriotism and dedication to duty.
In his remarks, Obi stressed that serving and retired members of the Armed Forces deserve greater recognition and respect for their sacrifices in protecting the country.
“The men and women of our Armed Forces, both serving and retired, deserve the highest honour and respect, not only in life but also in death,” Obi said.
He added that political leaders should personally identify with and honour those who have dedicated their lives to defending Nigeria.
The former Anambra governor also linked the need for improved military welfare to recent tragedies involving security personnel, including the loss of military officers in an aircraft crash and a helicopter incident.
According to Obi, retired military personnel should receive timely pensions, accessible healthcare and decent living conditions, while serving officers require proper equipment, training and medical support.
“Those who defend our nation deserve a nation that protects their dignity and well-being,” he said.
Obi prayed for the peaceful rest of General Obiakor and offered condolences to his family, while also praying for the safety of all serving members of Nigeria’s Armed Forces.
The late Lieutenant General Chikadibia Isaac Obiakor (rtd.) was a senior Nigerian Army officer who also served internationally through the United Nations peacekeeping system, where he contributed to global efforts in conflict resolution and peace support operations.
