President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the death of elder statesman, diplomat and veteran journalist, Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished public servants whose contributions will remain unforgettable.
In a statement issued on Saturday, President Tinubu said he received the news of the former ambassador’s passing with profound sadness, noting that Dele Cole dedicated his life to serving Nigeria through diplomacy, journalism, politics and public service.
The President said, “I received with profound sadness the news of the passing of Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, a distinguished diplomat, journalist, politician, and public servant, who died at 86.”
Tinubu stated that Ambassador Cole’s career reflected integrity, wisdom and commitment to national development.
According to him, the late diplomat devoted his life to public service and brought honour to every position he occupied.
The President praised Cole’s role in diplomacy, saying his work promoted dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation in advancing Nigeria’s interests at home and abroad.
Tinubu also highlighted the late statesman’s contribution to journalism, particularly during his tenure as Managing Director of the Daily Times.
He said, “As Managing Director of the Daily Times, he upheld the vital role of the press in holding public officials accountable, speaking truth to power, and strengthening democratic governance. His legacy in journalism and public life remains an enduring part of our national story.”
The President noted that Ambassador Cole witnessed many defining moments in Nigeria’s history and contributed meaningfully to the country’s development throughout his 86 years.
He added that the late diplomat’s life demonstrated the importance of experience, principled leadership and dedication to the public good.
President Tinubu extended his condolences to the family, friends and professional associates of the late elder statesman.
He said, “As we mourn his passing, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, professional associates and all whose lives he touched. I pray that memories of his remarkable life will bring them comfort and strength at this difficult time.”
The President concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of Ambassador Cole’s soul and asked God to grant his family the strength to bear the lost.
