Amnesty International has condemned the deadly attack on Binnari community in Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, saying at least 40 people were killed by gunmen in Friday’s assault.
The global human rights organisation described the attack as a tragedy that showed “utter disdain for the sanctity of life” and urged Nigerian authorities to bring those responsible to justice.
In a statement posted on its official social media page on Saturday, Amnesty International said the number of people killed was far higher than the initial police figure.
“Amnesty International strongly condemns the gunmen’s deadly attack on Binnari in Karim Lamido local government area of Taraba state in which at least 40 people were killed. The attack which took place on Friday 23 October 2026 shows utter disdain for the sanctity of life,” the organisation said.
It added: “Earlier police confirmed the killing of 10 people, but later in the day more bodies were recovered — and more are still being discovered.”
According to Amnesty International, the attackers not only killed residents but also destroyed homes and means of livelihood.
“Apart from killing people wantonly the gunmen also burnt down foodstuff, homes, shops and motorcycles. The community is now littered with dead bodies, some burnt beyond recognition, as families declare many still missing,” the statement added.
The organisation accused the authorities of failing to adequately protect vulnerable rural communities from repeated attacks by armed groups.
“The Nigerian authorities continue to leave rural communities in some parts of the north at the mercy of gunmen that are repeatedly commit atrocities with impunity. This attack must be investigated impartially, while survivors must be provided with adequate reparations,” Amnesty International stated.
It also said condemning attacks without taking concrete action was no longer enough.
“On the side of the authorities, issuing bland statements condemning these horrific attacks is not enough. Genuine commitment to protecting the people must be demonstrated by ensuring adequate security of lives and property, as well as ensuring justice for the victims.”
The organisation further warned that the continued failure to prosecute those behind such attacks was encouraging more violence.
“Consistent failure of the authorities to bring the suspected perpetrators to justice is clearly emboldening impunity.”
The attack on Binnari community occurred shortly after Juma’a prayers on Friday, forcing many residents to flee their homes. Local volunteers and security personnel have continued search operations for missing persons, while concerns remain over the humanitarian situation in the affected community.
The latest attack is one of several deadly assaults that have hit communities in Taraba State in recent months, highlighting growing concerns over insecurity in parts of the North-East and North-Central regions. Human rights groups and residents have repeatedly called on the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen protection for rural communities and ensure perpetrators are held accountable.
