The governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, Usman Shehu Bawa, popularly known as ABG, has joined other opposition candidates in calling for free, fair and credible elections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The opposition candidates also reaffirmed their commitment to political freedom, inclusion and the protection of democratic rights, expressing concerns over what they described as the persecution of opposition figures and shrinking political space under the current administration.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of Shehu ABG, Yusuf Idris, the candidates made their position known during a meeting in Kaduna, where they discussed the political environment and preparations for the forthcoming elections.
Those at the meeting included Isa Ashiru, the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The candidates stressed the need to protect fundamental human rights, promote political pluralism and ensure a level playing field for all political parties participating in the 2027 elections.
They maintained that no government should deploy state power to intimidate political opponents, restrict legitimate political activities or undermine the constitutional right of citizens to freely elect their leaders.
The opposition figures further clarified that their meeting was not driven by partisan interests or political rivalry, but by a common desire to protect democratic institutions and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
They pledged to strengthen cooperation among their respective parties, encourage peaceful political engagement and work towards elections that are free, fair, transparent and reflective of the wishes of the people of Kaduna State.
The candidates also reaffirmed their determination to pursue their political ambitions through lawful and peaceful means, urging relevant authorities to create an enabling environment where all political parties can organise, campaign and compete without undue interference.
