Manchester United teenager, Shea Lacey has written his name into the club’s Champions League history after setting up Matheus Cunha’s winning goal in Tuesday’s 3-2 comeback victory over Roma at Old Trafford.
Aged 19 years and 203 days, Lacey came off the bench in the 75th minute before producing the decisive pass for Cunha to score United’s third goal in the 86th minute.
The teenager’s contribution completed a remarkable turnaround for United, who had gone into half-time trailing 2-0 after Matias Soulé and Donyell Malen put Roma ahead inside the opening 17 minutes.
Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 58th minute before Cunha levelled the score in the 83rd minute.
Three minutes later, Lacey found the Brazilian with a well-timed pass, allowing him to drive into the box and fire past Roma goalkeeper Devis Vásquez.
Manchester United celebrated the youngster’s achievement on its official social media account, describing his impact with the words: “Making an impact.”
Lacey’s contribution also earned praise from manager Michael Carrick, who expressed delight at the teenager’s performance and highlighted his willingness to help the team defensively after moving to right-back during the closing stages.
Cunha, who scored both of United’s late goals, was sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card, but the hosts held on to secure all three points.
For Lacey, the assist was more than a contribution to a memorable victory. It marked his arrival as a young player capable of influencing major European nights at Old Trafford
