FirstBank has raised the stakes for the 65th Lagos Amateur Open Golf Championship with a total prize money of ₦34 million set to be contested by golfers.
The seven-day tournament is scheduled to hold from November 16 to November 22 at the Ikoyi Club 1938, Lagos.
The championship will attract professional golfers, amateurs across different handicap categories and corporate participants.
FirstBank Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Olusegun Alebiosu, disclosed the prize package during a news conference in Lagos.
Alebiosu said the increased reward was part of the bank’s continued commitment to promoting golf development and supporting sporting talents in Nigeria.
He said the competition, organised under FirstBank’s “Let’s Play Golf” initiative, had become one of the most recognised amateur golf tournaments on Nigeria’s sporting calendar.
The FirstBank chief executive explained that the winner of the professional category would receive ₦10 million from the total prize purse.
He noted that the championship had produced opportunities for young golfers to showcase their talents, improve their rankings and pursue professional careers.
Alebiosu added that FirstBank had supported golf for more than six decades through its sponsorship of the tournament and other sporting initiatives.
Professional golfer and defending champion, Monday Eze, described the ₦10 million winner’s prize as a major boost for players and upcoming golfers.
Eze said the reward would motivate more young talents to take golf seriously and work towards professional success.
The tournament will also feature a Corporate Golf Challenge where organisations will compete while contributing to charity causes.
Ikoyi Club 1938 Golf Section Captain, Afolabi Balogun, said the championship had continued to promote excellence, sportsmanship and stronger relationships among golfers.
