Nigerian Flamingos
Nigeria’s Flamingos have achieved a historic milestone after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Rabat, Morocco, to become the first African team to win the competition.
The victory marked a new chapter in Nigerian football history, ending years of near misses and transforming the Flamingos’ previous World Cup dreams into a reality. The triumph also surpassed Nigeria’s best previous performance at the tournament — a bronze medal finish in 2022.
Coach Hakeem Busari’s young squad showed remarkable character throughout the competition, especially after beginning their campaign with a disappointing defeat to Poland. Instead of collapsing under pressure, the Nigerian girls responded with six straight victories against Puerto Rico, defending champions North Korea, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil and Japan.
In the final, Nigeria demonstrated maturity beyond their age. Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring in the 39th minute after combining effectively with Mary Dunstan, giving the Flamingos a crucial advantage before halftime.
Nigeria returned from the break with even greater determination, as Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead two minutes into the second half after Esther Stephen created the opportunity.
Although Japan, champions in 2014, fought back through Fuki Ito’s 80th-minute goal, Nigeria’s defence held firm during a tense closing period to secure a famous 2-1 victory.
The win represents more than just a trophy. It is a statement that Nigerian women’s football has entered a new era, inspiring millions of young girls across the country to believe that they too can reach the highest level of the sport.
