The Bauchi Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), has said that the news of the death of Dr. Zuwaira Hassan, in a fatal motor crash on Monday is the most shocking and devastating news they’ve received in recent times.

The NMA in the state, Dr. Adamu Sambo, who stated this on Tuesday at a press conference to commence activities for the 2020 Nigerian Medical Association week held at the Maigoro plaza in Bauchi, said that her death is a big loss to the medical association and the people of the state.

He said that the deceased was an active and fulfilled member of the medical association in the state.

NATIONAL ACCORD had reported that Dr. Zuwaira Hassan, who served as Commissioner of Health during the immediate past administration of Mohammed Abubakar, died in a fatal crash while on her way to Bauchi from Jos, Plateau State, at the age of 46.

The crash occurred on Monday at about 7.40am at Zaranda village, about 36 kilometers away from Bauchi metropolis.

She was, until her death, the Head of Department, Community Medicine, College of Medicine, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi.

Sambo said that the medical week which has the theme: “Strategies for Health System Recovery during the COVID 19 pandemic in Nigeria,” is dedicated to late Dr. Hassan, for numerous achievements in the health sector in the state.

“Dr. Zuwaira’s death came to us and everyone in the state as a great shock. Her death is one of the most shocking news we’ve heard in recent times.

“I can recall that three days before her death, she invited me to her house and we had a chat on some issues in the profession generally,” he stated.

He added that: “She was a fulfilled and active member of this association who was a Consultant of Public Health, HOD of Community Health Department, former Commissioner of Health, it is not everytime that you have women from the north enrolling in school but she was able to achieve these giant strides. She has made tremendous impact in the health sector, particularly when she was Commissioner.

“We had outlined a lot of programmes for this week but because of the loss of a pillar that we have in the association, we will not be able to do them all but we will still do the week which will be a low key not as we used to do.

“The whole week is dedicated to Dr. Zuwaira Hassan, the former Commissioner of Health, who died yesterday as a result of a fatal accident. Most of the media interactions we will have will be centered around her life, struggles and her impact in the health sector in Bauchi State.

“We will miss her greatly as her absence has formed a vaccum in our hearts that will be difficult to fill. I pray that Allah comfort the family, the entire people of the state and grant her soul Aljannah Firdaus.”

The NMA Chairman said the late Commissioner was a very humble, honest, lovable kind, simple and easy-going person, pointing out nobody could fault her for anything as she always carry everybody along in the discharge of her duties.
