Jordan Henderson rolled back the years with two goals as Chelsea thrashed Bournemouth 5-1 on Saturday, putting the 36-year-old in rare company with Cristiano Ronaldo in English Premier League (EPL) history.
Henderson opened the scoring in the second minute at Stamford Bridge before returning in the 70th minute to seal Chelsea’s emphatic victory with a superb free-kick.
Chelsea’s second goal came through an own goal by António Silva, while João Pedro scored twice, finding the net in the 46th and 67th minutes. Bournemouth briefly threatened a response when Evanilson scored in the 51st minute, but Chelsea maintained control before Henderson completed the scoring.
The brace made Henderson the oldest player to score twice in a Premier League match since Ronaldo achieved the feat for Manchester United against Norwich City in April 2022, aged 37.
For a player whose career has taken him from Liverpool to Saudi Arabia and back to English football, the performance was another reminder that he can still make an impact at the highest level.
Henderson left Liverpool in 2023 for Al-Ettifaq before returning to England with Brentford. His subsequent move to Chelsea raised questions about whether he could still deliver in the Premier League.
Saturday’s display offered a strong response. Beyond his two goals, Henderson brought his experience to a Chelsea side looking to blend young talent with proven leadership. His second strike, a well-taken free-kick, provided a fitting finish to an impressive afternoon.
Chelsea’s emphatic win was among the day’s standout Premier League results, but there was drama elsewhere.
Arsenal came from behind to beat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium. James Justin put Leeds ahead in the 55th minute, but Riccardo Calafiori equalised seven minutes later before Bruno Guimarães struck the winner in the 70th minute.
Brighton secured a 2-0 away win over Sunderland, with Maxim De Cuyper opening the scoring in the 53rd minute before Jaouen Hadjam added a second in stoppage time.
Ipswich Town produced a late turnaround to beat Fulham 2-1. Ryan Sessegnon gave Fulham the lead in the 55th minute, but Abdoul Ouattara equalised in the 89th before Dara O’Shea scored the winner in stoppage time.
While the other fixtures delivered their share of drama, Henderson’s performance stood out for its personal significance. At 36, he has matched a milestone last reached by Ronaldo, showing that experience can still count for plenty in the Premier League.
