Senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Kogi State, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle
A senior lecturer at Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, Kogi State, Dr. Olabode Abimbola Ibikunle, tragically died on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in a hotel in Anyigba, allegedly during an intimate encounter with a female student.
The incident, which has sparked widespread concern, was reported to the Kogi State Police Command by the hotel management.
The Police Command’s spokesperson, SP William Aya, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lokoja on Friday.
He described the event as unfortunate and noted that an autopsy had been conducted to ascertain the precise cause of death.
According to Aya, the hotel manager, Moses Friday, alerted the police after a 22-year-old 200-level student, Gloria Samuel, rushed to the hotel reception to report that Dr. Ibikunle had collapsed shortly after their encounter. The lecturer was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Dr. Ibikunle, a married man with children, had checked into the hotel earlier that day with Samuel, a student in the Department of Social Studies Education at PAAU.
A source from the university, speaking anonymously to NAN, corroborated that the lecturer was engaged in sexual activity with the student at the time of his collapse.
Unverified reports also suggest that Ibikunle may have consumed several energy drinks prior to the incident, though this has yet to be confirmed by authorities.
The police have taken Samuel into custody for questioning, and she has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lokoja for further investigation.
Aya emphasized that the police are conducting a thorough probe to uncover the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death, and further actions will depend on the investigation’s findings.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the PAAU community, raising questions about professional ethics and student-lecturer relationships. Authorities have assured the public that the case will be handled with diligence to ensure justice and clarity. (NAN)
