Ademola Lookman and Alex Baena were on target as Atletico Madrid secured a 3-1 win over Sevilla on Saturday, continuing their strong start to the LaLiga season.
The result takes Atletico to seven points from their opening three matches and keeps them at the top of the table, while Sevilla suffered their first defeat of the campaign.
Baena got Atletico off to a fast start, putting the visitors ahead in the fourth minute. Lookman then made it 2-0 in the 26th minute before Baena completed his brace seven minutes later to put Atletico firmly in control.
Sevilla pulled one back through Miguel Sierra in the 66th minute, but Atletico managed the game well enough to see out the victory.
Lookman’s goal was another positive moment for the Nigerian forward, who is gradually becoming an important part of Atletico’s attacking options.
The win also came without Julian Alvarez, who missed the match after feeling unwell. His absence meant Atletico had to find another way to lead the attack, and Baena and Lookman took responsibility.
Baena’s two goals and Lookman’s contribution will give Diego Simeone plenty to consider as Atletico continue their campaign, particularly with Alvarez’s situation still attracting attention.
For now, Atletico have made their intentions clear: they intend to stay near the top, regardless of who is available.
