NBA President, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya
Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has constituted a three-member committee to investigate allegations surrounding the receipt, management and disbursement of a ₦100 million gift received by its Owerri Branch from the Imo State Government.
The NBA President, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, announced the committee following concerns raised by members of the branch over the handling of the funds.
The move also followed a requisition by 183 members calling for an Extraordinary General Meeting to discuss the matter.
Members of the committee are the NBA General Secretary, Afam Okeke; Third Vice-President, Iniobong Irene Pepple; and Treasurer, Esther Jimoh.
According to the NBA President, the committee will review relevant financial documents, receive submissions from concerned individuals and present its findings and recommendations by October 30, 2026.
She said the committee would also attend the Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 15, 2026, as her representatives to observe proceedings and support a peaceful and organised engagement.
Badejo-Okusanya stressed that setting up the committee does not mean that any individual has been found guilty of wrongdoing.
“It is important to emphasise that the constitution of the committee does not amount to a finding against any person,” she said.
She added that anyone whose actions are questioned would be given an opportunity to respond as part of a fair investigation process.
“Everyone whose conduct is called into question will be given a fair opportunity to respond,” the NBA President stated.
She also directed that all relevant financial records must be preserved and made available to enable the committee to conduct a proper examination.
The NBA President said the intervention reflects the association’s commitment to transparency, accountability and due process in handling internal concerns.
“As President of the Nigerian Bar Association, I remain committed to ensuring that concerns raised by members are addressed through a fair, transparent and orderly process,” she said.
She added that accountability must work together with due process to maintain members’ trust and confidence in the association.
The investigation comes amid growing concerns among some NBA Owerri Branch members over the management of the financial support reportedly provided by the Imo State Government to the branch.
