Elder statesman, Bamanga Tukur
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of its former National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, describing his passing at the age of 90 as the farewell of a true statesman.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary of the Interim National Working Committee, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP said members across Nigeria and the diaspora received the news of Tukur’s death with profound sadness.
According to the party, Tukur made significant contributions to Nigeria’s development through his roles in public service, politics and the private sector.
The PDP noted that the late elder statesman played key roles in shaping policies and projects in ports administration, international trade and industry. It also recalled that he served as governor of the defunct Gongola State and occupied several other top political and public offices during his lifetime.
Reflecting on his commitment to the party, the PDP revealed that it had met with Tukur only a few months before his death, during which he reaffirmed his confidence in the party.
The statement quoted the late politician as having “specifically reiterated his unflinching belief in the PDP as the truly national party capable of providing solutions to Nigeria’s challenges and charged our National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki, SAN, to keep the flag of the party flying.”
While acknowledging that his death was painful, the party said it regarded his passing as “a statesman’s farewell.”
The PDP also extended its condolences to the late Tukur’s family and admirers, saying, “We join his many admirers to mourn his passing and condole with his family.”
Alhaji Bamanga Tukur served as National Chairman of the PDP and was widely known for his contributions to governance, business, public administration and Nigeria’s political development over several decades.
