Lawmakers at the senate
Senate on Wednesday condemned the deadly attack on Binari community in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State, where about 80 people were reportedly killed.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Sen. Shuaibu Lau (APC-Taraba) during plenary.
Lau said the attack had created fear, displaced residents and disrupted peaceful life in the affected community, warning that repeated attacks threatened the government’s constitutional duty to protect lives and property.
He also cautioned that continued violence could lead to more deaths, destruction of property and a worsening humanitarian crisis if urgent action was not taken.
The Senate therefore urged security agencies to deploy more personnel and establish additional security camps along the borders of Taraba, Plateau and Bauchi states to improve surveillance.
It also called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to provide immediate relief materials to victims of the attack.
Lawmakers stressed that no community should be left at the mercy of criminal groups, insisting that protecting lives and property remains the government’s primary responsibility.
The Senate observed a one-minute silence in honour of those who lost their lives in the Binari attack.
