Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the opening session of the General Debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States.
Shettima joined Heads of State and Government from across the world at the annual gathering, where leaders are presenting their countries’ positions on key global issues, including peace, security, sustainable development, climate action and reforms of the international system.
According to a statement issued by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), President Tinubu was represented at the high-level session by the Vice President.
Among the leaders participating in this year’s General Debate is President Donald Trump of the United States, alongside other world leaders addressing pressing international challenges.
The General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly provides a platform for countries to outline their foreign policy priorities and propose solutions to global issues affecting the international community.
Nigeria’s participation reflects its continued engagement in multilateral diplomacy and its commitment to working with other nations on issues relating to international peace, security, economic development, climate change and institutional reforms.
The annual gathering also offers opportunities for bilateral meetings and discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation between member states and advancing shared global interests.
The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly has attracted leaders from across the world to New York, where discussions are expected to focus on conflicts in different regions, sustainable development, humanitarian challenges, global economic recovery and reforms of international institutions.
