In marking the 2021 International Women Day, rural women in Sokoto on Friday made passionate appeal to political stakehokders in the state to consider a female governor come 2023.
Speaking on behalf of the Sokoto Rural Women at the Presidential Lodge of Sokoto Government House, Sha’afatu Umar, who is the Women Coordinator for Shagari Local gGovernment Area reminded the audience that, what men can do, women can do better.
In marking the day with the theme: “Srengthening Rural Women’s Continuation to Sustainable Food Systems and Trade”, the women marched from Women Development Center in their large numbers through Sultan Bello Secondary school and Miyetti Allah Roundabout before arriving Sokoto Government house to convey their message to Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal.
The rural women march was organized by the Sokoto State Ministry for Women and Children Affairs in collaborarion with PLAN International and SHOW CE Project with funding from Global Affairs Canada
While appreciating Tambuwal for his numerous developmental policies and programmes which women are beneficiaries, Shaafatu averred that as mothers, they are happy that the world is giving them their rightful place in the society.
Sha’afatu, further, thanked Governor Tambuwal for the passage of VAPP and appealed for the speedy passage of the Child Protection Law as well as ensure adequate justice for survivors of GBV in the State.
“We the rural women are here to appreciate Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal for appointing women into various offices of governance in the state and convey our messages to him as well”.
Responding on behalf of Governor Tambuwal, the State Commissioner for Women and Children Affairs, Honourable Kulu Abdullahi Sifawa said women are unarguably the backbone of every society.
Continuing, Tambuwal said he consider women as intergral part of his governance.
Talking about the worrisome degree of insecurity facing the nation, Tambuwal urged all the women to continue to pray for Nigeria.
While appealing to mothers to instill sound morals into their wards, Tambuwal admonished mothers never to stop correcting their wards when they are wrong.
