Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel
Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel has died after suffering a cardiac arrest following an on-field collision during a league match. He was 30 years old.
The Spanish second-tier club confirmed his death on Tuesday, a day after the tragic incident against FC Andorra.
De Miguel collapsed after colliding with Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who rushed out of his area to clear a long ball.
The referee immediately stopped the game, and the match was later abandoned with only minutes left to play.
Medical staff rushed onto the pitch and treated the striker for more than five minutes.
He was later taken to hospital by ambulance for emergency treatment.
Tenerife had earlier announced that the player was in a stable condition despite the seriousness of his condition.
However, the club later revealed that his neurological condition worsened before he passed away.
In an emotional statement, Tenerife said the club was devastated by the loss and had no words to ease the pain.
The club added that De Miguel’s family appreciated the outpouring of support and asked for privacy as they mourned.
FC Andorra also expressed sadness over the tragedy and offered condolences to the player’s family, teammates and Tenerife.
UEFA announced that a minute’s silence will be observed before all its matches this week in honour of the late striker.
Tributes also poured in from Barcelona, Real Madrid, LaLiga, Arsenal and many other football clubs.
Spanish police have opened a routine investigation into the death because it followed a non-natural incident during a sporting event.
The tragic death of Jesus de Miguel has left the football community in mourning, with fans and clubs paying tribute to the talented striker.
