President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the winners of the weekend by-elections conducted in five constituencies across Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states, describing the outcome as another sign of Nigerians’ continued confidence in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its reform agenda.
The President said the victories recorded by the APC in four of the five contested seats reflected growing grassroots support for the ruling party and its efforts to improve the country’s economy and governance.
The APC secured four seats, while the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) won one.
The successful APC candidates are Kallamu MaiJama’a for the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency in Gombe State, Husseini Datti for the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State, Okolosi Ator for the Udu State Constituency in Delta State, and Yakubu Ali for the Disina State Constituency in Bauchi State.
Adamu Yakubu of the APM emerged winner of the Sakwa State Constituency seat in Bauchi State.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu thanked voters for their participation and expressed optimism that the support shown during the elections would strengthen his administration’s drive to implement key reforms.
“I am encouraged by the support Nigerians at the grassroots continue to show for our party and for the difficult but necessary reforms our administration has implemented over the past three years.
“I urge Nigerians to remain steadfast and not be swayed by political opportunism. The benefits of these reforms will become increasingly evident as we enter the next phase of our programme,” President Tinubu said.
The President also charged the newly elected lawmakers to live up to the expectations of the people by providing effective and responsible representation in their constituencies.
He urged candidates who were unsuccessful in the elections to accept the outcome peacefully and remain committed to strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process through constructive engagement.
President Tinubu further commended voters, security agencies and other stakeholders for ensuring peaceful conduct during the by-elections.
He also praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for successfully organising the polls after the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
The President encouraged the electoral commission to consolidate on the progress recorded, address any observed shortcomings and continue improving the electoral process ahead of future elections, particularly the general elections scheduled for January and February.
The by-elections were conducted to fill vacant legislative seats in the affected constituencies. They are regarded as an important test of political strength ahead of the next round of nationwide elections, with observers closely monitoring voter participation, electoral conduct and the performance of political parties.
