President Bola Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to represent him at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States, where Nigeria will present its position on key global issues affecting development, peace, security and international cooperation.
The high-level gathering, regarded as the world’s largest annual meeting of heads of state, government leaders and diplomats, will hold from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme: “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
Shettima will head Nigeria’s delegation, which includes Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, ministers and other senior government officials.
As part of the General Debate, the Vice President will deliver Nigeria’s national statement, outlining the country’s priorities and perspectives on major global issues with direct implications for national development, economic growth, peace and security, as well as international partnerships.
The Nigerian delegation is also expected to participate in a series of high-level meetings and engagements throughout the UNGA week. These discussions will focus on the Right to Development, climate action and other strategic issues considered important to Nigeria and the African continent.
The annual UN General Assembly provides a platform for world leaders to deliberate on pressing global challenges, strengthen diplomatic relations and seek collective solutions to issues ranging from conflict and poverty to climate change, sustainable development and global economic reforms.
Nigeria’s participation at this year’s session is expected to reinforce the country’s commitment to multilateral cooperation while advancing its interests on matters that affect Africa and the wider international community.
