Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria (COCSON) has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for releasing the final list of candidates for the 2027 governorship elections, urging Nigerians not to rush to blame the electoral body over the omission of some names.
The coalition said the publication of the final list shows that INEC is keeping to its electoral timetable and giving political parties, candidates and voters enough time to prepare for the elections.
In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Dr. Tabuko Kennedy, the group described the release of the list as a major milestone that would strengthen confidence in the electoral process.
COCSON said although some candidates may not have appeared on the list, Nigerians should avoid making accusations against INEC without first understanding the circumstances behind such decisions.
It explained that missing names could be linked to court rulings, ongoing legal disputes, disagreements over party primaries, failure to meet statutory nomination requirements or other legal and procedural issues.
The coalition stated, “The absence of a candidate’s name does not automatically imply deliberate exclusion or wrongdoing by the Commission. Such situations may arise from court judgments, litigation, disputes over party primaries, failure to meet statutory nomination requirements or other legal and procedural issues.”
According to the group, political parties also have a responsibility to conduct lawful and transparent nomination processes, noting that some omissions may result from mistakes made by parties or candidates rather than the electoral commission.
It urged affected candidates to seek clarification from INEC where necessary and pursue any complaints through the appropriate legal channels.
COCSON also reminded INEC of the need to remain transparent and provide timely explanations on issues that may create public concern, saying this would further boost confidence in the electoral process.
Beyond the candidates’ list, the coalition appealed to politicians, political parties and their supporters to shun violence, hate speech and intimidation during the electioneering period.
It further called on security agencies to act professionally and fairly, while urging all stakeholders to put Nigeria’s peace above political interests.
As preparations for the 2027 governorship elections continue, COCSON said credible polls can only be achieved when INEC, political parties, candidates, security agencies and voters all play their respective roles in line with the law.
