A food vendor in Maiduguri
By SADIQ ABUBAKAR, Maiduguri –
In a heartfelt appeal, petty traders, food sellers, and craftsmen in Borno State have called on Governor Babagana Umar Zulum and the Borno State Geographic Information System (BOGIS) to intervene in the frequent raids and seizures of their properties by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) from the Bulabilin Sector Command.
The traders, who sell essential items like rice, beans, and vegetables, complained that they are being terrorized and harassed by CJTF members, who claim to be acting on directives to clear the area.
Despite paying their taxes and operating legally, the traders alleged that their properties are seized, and they are forced to pay fines or bribes to continue their businesses.
The leaders of the traders emphasized that they are law-abiding citizens who are only trying to earn a living to feed their families, pay school fees, and rent.
They argued that they are not obstructing traffic or causing any nuisance, unlike some keke NAPEP operators who park on both sides of the road.
The traders urged Governor Zulum to assist them in resolving the issue, allowing them to continue their businesses peacefully. They pledged their loyalty and obedience to the government, seeking protection and support to survive and contribute to the state’s economy.
The appeal highlights the struggles of petty traders and food sellers in Borno State, who face harassment and intimidation despite their efforts to earn a living legally. The traders hope that Governor Zulum and BOGIS will intervene to address their plight and ensure their safety and well-being.
