North-Central Renaissance Movement (NCRM), a political pressure group, has cautioned political parties against overlooking the North-Central zone for the 2027 presidential ticket, warning that such a move could cost them the region’s votes.
The group’s chairman, Prof. K’tso Nghargbu, issued this statement during a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, reacting to the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Nghargbu declared, “Any political party that fails to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the North-Central risks losing our votes entirely.”
He emphasized the region’s pivotal role as a unifying force, stating, “With the highest concentration of ethnic groups, including Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba in Kogi and Kwara, and Igbo in Kogi and Benue, the North-Central embodies Nigeria’s spirit of inclusivity.”
Highlighting the region’s contributions, Nghargbu noted, “The North-Central has powered Nigeria’s economy through its hydroelectric dams and hosts the largest concentration of mineral resources, laying a strong foundation for economic diversification.”
He pointed out the zone’s historical exclusion, saying, “As the only geopolitical zone yet to produce a civilian president or vice-president since independence, the North-Central’s time to lead is overdue.”
Nghargbu stressed the region’s role in fostering national unity, particularly during the Nigerian Civil War, and its consistent support for candidates from other zones.
“Our diversity equips us to produce a leader capable of managing Nigeria’s complex social fabric and promoting inclusive governance,” he said.
He also highlighted the region’s wealth of talent, noting, “The North-Central has produced exceptional leaders, technocrats, and professionals ready to deliver transformative governance.”
The NCRM chairman framed the zone’s 2027 presidential aspiration as a chance to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and address national challenges.
“A North-Central presidency will promote unity, justice, and prosperity for all Nigerians,” Nghargbu concluded.
