Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the disbursement of over ₦5.6 billion in gratuities to 1,198 former councillors who served across the state’s 44 local government areas between 2018 and 2020.
Speaking at a symbolic disbursement ceremony in held at the Coronation Hall of the Government House in Kano, Governor Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of public servants—both active and retired.
“This payment is not just a fulfilment of our promise, but a demonstration of our commitment to social justice,” the governor said.
“These former councillors played important roles in grassroots governance, and it is only fair that we honour their service by clearing these long-overdue entitlements.”
Governor Yusuf added that the payout was intended to ease the financial burden many of the beneficiaries had carried for years, while also restoring public confidence in government obligations.
Several of the former councillors, visibly elated, confirmed they had already received credit alerts and expressed deep gratitude to the governor for what they described as a long-awaited intervention.
“For years, we thought we had been forgotten,” said Malam Abdullahi Haruna from Kabo Local Government Area.
“This administration has proven to be different—Governor Yusuf has done what others before him could not.”
Also speaking, Malam Musa Ibrahim from Doguwa said, “I just received the alert, and this payment will make a huge difference in my life and that of my family. It’s a promise fulfilled, and a clear sign of true leadership.”
Another beneficiary, Malam Abubakar Isa from Fagge, called the governor “God-sent,” noting that the gratuity had come at a crucial time.
“We prayed for this day for years. Today, I received my payment, and I’m grateful beyond words,” he said.
The event was attended by senior government officials, traditional leaders, and community representatives who hailed the move as a major step towards rebuilding trust between government and grassroots leaders.
Governor Yusuf concluded by reiterating that his administration will continue to design and implement policies that prioritise human welfare and uphold the dignity of public service.
