Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the Nigerian Senate to conduct a thorough and transparent screening of Professor Joash Amupitan, nominated for the position of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Addressing journalists on Friday in Abuja, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, emphasized the critical importance of the screening process, urging lawmakers to uphold democratic values in evaluating the nominee’s suitability.
> “I believe the Senate and the nominee understand that INEC is vital to the preservation of democracy in this country,” Ologunagba stated.

He appealed to Prof. Amupitan to approach the role—if confirmed—with a commitment to rebuilding public trust in the electoral system and protecting the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy.
Highlighting the need for credible institutions, Ologunagba noted that strong systems are essential for transparent leadership transitions and for maintaining confidence in electoral outcomes.
> “INEC must address Nigerians’ concerns and ensure elections are free, fair, and credible,” he said.
“Nigerians will no longer tolerate the excuses of the past. The task ahead demands integrity and a clear focus on public interest.”
On the political front, Ologunagba responded to reports that Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State may be considering a defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He downplayed the significance of such moves, insisting that the PDP remains a strong, grassroots-driven party anchored on sound policies and democratic values.
> “The defections you hear about are not based on principles or policy disagreements. They are often driven by coercion, intimidation, and harassment,” he claimed.
Looking ahead to 2027, Ologunagba argued that the next general election would not be shaped by elite political maneuvering but by ordinary Nigerians enduring economic hardship.
> “This is about parents whose children sleep hungry and patients who can’t afford healthcare. That’s the reality. And that’s where the PDP stands—with the people.”
He also announced that the PDP’s National Convention is scheduled to take place in Ibadan from November 15 to 16, adding that all constitutional requirements had been fulfilled to ensure an inclusive and lawful gathering, even amid possible legal challenges.
