Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, host of the 2025 PDP National Convention, has said he is confident the gathering will mark a turning point for the party’s national future.
Makinde made the remark on Saturday while welcoming delegates to the convention at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
He noted that the Peoples Democratic Party had made significant sacrifices to ensure the event held as planned and urged members to maintain unity and decorum as proceedings continue.
He also applauded the Convention Organising Committee, led by Adamawa State Governor Umaru Fintiri, who was formally presented with the convention flag.
Declaring the event open, PDP Acting National Chairman Iliya Damagum—after receiving the party flag—called on delegates to remain steadfast in their loyalty and dedication to the PDP. Damagum praised Makinde for his consistent support and said he was optimistic that the convention would “further strengthen the party.”
In his goodwill message, Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, Senator Adolphus Wabara, commended delegates for their endurance and commitment. He assured members that the PDP “would not perish” but would continue to advance, urging party leaders to sustain an inclusive leadership style that encourages collective effort.
Senator Abdul Ningi of Bauchi North echoed similar sentiments, saying the PDP’s mission is deeply tied to the future of Nigeria. He appealed to supporters of democracy to remain active in safeguarding democratic values.
Earlier, the convention witnessed the presentation of several flags: Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum received the Nigerian flag; Governor Makinde received the Oyo State flag; Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro accepted the Senate flag; while Mr. Fred Agbedi received the House of Representatives flag.
The convention opened with the accreditation of more than 3,000 delegates.
