Operatives of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a 20-year-old suspect over the alleged gang rape of a 19-year-old woman in the Oke Sopen area of Ijebu-Igbo, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend a second suspect who escaped.
The command’s spokesman, ASP Oluborode Opeyemi, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued to newsmen on Thursday in Abeokuta.
ASP Opeyemi said the police said the arrest followed a complaint lodged by the victim’s mother at the Ijebu-Igbo Police Division on September 1, 2026, over an incident that allegedly occurred on August 30 at their residence in Odo Idi Scale, Oke Sopen.
According to him, officers immediately visited the scene to collect evidence before taking the survivor to the General Hospital with a Police Medical Form for examination and treatment.
Following preliminary investigations, detectives arrested one of the suspects, identified as Ayomide Kamula, 20, who is currently in custody and assisting with the investigation.
He said security operatives have launched an intensive manhunt for the fleeing suspect, identified as Boye Balogun, who remains at large.
He added that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, strongly condemned the alleged crime, describing sexual and gender-based violence as “an egregious crime that will not be tolerated under any circumstance.”
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to a “zero-tolerance policy against sexual offences” across Ogun State and assured the victim’s family that investigators would ensure justice is served.
The police commissioner also pledged that “no stone will be left unturned” in tracking down the fleeing suspect and bringing everyone connected with the case before the law.
The Ogun State Police Command urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible information through its emergency communication channels.
