Enugu State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing the alleged torture and degrading treatment of a 60-year-old woman in Amafu Village, Ugbawka, Nkanu East Local Government Area.
The victim, identified as Chinenye Okonkwo, was allegedly assaulted after being accused of witchcraft and blamed for the death of her husband’s brother’s wife.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take over the case and ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.
Police spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said officers from the Nkanu East Police Division had already visited the victim and recorded her statement following the circulation of the disturbing video.
According to preliminary findings, the woman was allegedly subjected to severe abuse, including being forced to eat human faeces, over the accusations against her.
The suspects involved in the incident are currently on the run, while police said efforts had been intensified to identify, track and arrest them.
Condemning the incident, CP Giwa described the alleged assault and degrading treatment as unacceptable and ordered a thorough investigation into the matter.
He also directed investigators to ensure that everyone connected with the attack, including any accomplices, is brought to justice.
The Commissioner warned residents against taking the law into their own hands through jungle justice or any form of self-help.
He assured the public that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
