Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Thursday assured Nigerians that his administration would prioritise national unity, security, the fight against corruption, quality healthcare and education if elected into office.
Obi gave the assurance during a town hall meeting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, as part of his nationwide grassroots sensitisation tour ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to him, the tour took him to Ebonyi after a similar engagement in Akwanga, Nasarawa State, on Wednesday.
Before the town hall meeting, Obi stopped at Nkalagu and Ezillo to greet supporters and later visited the Ezillo market, where he interacted with women traders and farmers before joining party supporters on a road walk to the venue in Abakaliki.
He said participants at the meeting raised concerns over insecurity, especially kidnapping and banditry, corruption, rising government borrowing and the poor condition of hospitals, schools and other public infrastructure.
Obi noted that one of the most emotional moments was the contribution from a representative of persons living with disabilities, who spoke about the difficulties they face and the lack of adequate support from government and society.
Responding to the concerns, Obi said, “I assured the participants that, upon election, our foremost priorities will be to unite the country, decisively tackle insecurity and confront corruption, while pulling our people out of poverty.”
Speaking on the welfare of persons living with disabilities, he added, “To our brothers and sisters living with disabilities, I reiterated that the compassion of a nation is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable citizens. We will work with state governments to ensure their inclusion, proper care and dignity.”
The former Anambra State governor also promised to improve access to quality healthcare and education across the country, saying, “We will also invest massively in education and healthcare, including at least one fully functional primary healthcare centre in every political ward across Nigeria, while working to reduce the cost of living and expand opportunities for all.”
He thanked participants, party members, organisers and the people of Ebonyi State for what he described as their warm reception and active participation in the town hall meeting.
Obi ended the engagement with his familiar message of hope, saying, “A New Nigeria is POssible, and Nigeria will be OK!”
The nationwide town hall series is part of Obi’s ongoing consultations with Nigerians as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general election.
