Armed Forces of Nigeria has arrested sixteen officers over alleged acts of indiscipline and violations of military regulations, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced on Saturday.
The arrests, made during what was described as a routine military exercise, are part of an ongoing internal disciplinary effort to preserve professionalism and order within the ranks.
Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, confirmed the development in a statement issued to the press, revealing that investigations had linked the officers’ actions to dissatisfaction over career progression.
“Investigations have revealed that their grievances stemmed largely from perceived career stagnation caused by repeated failure in promotion examinations, among other issues,” Brig Gen Gusau stated.
He added that some of the arrested personnel were already under jurisdiction for separate offences and were either awaiting or undergoing trial at the time of the incident.
“Their conduct was deemed incompatible with the standards of military service,” the Defence spokesperson noted.
He assured that the matter would be handled through established military protocols, saying:
“Upon completion of investigation, indicted officers will face the full military disciplinary process in accordance with established procedures to ensure accountability and preserve professionalism within the Armed Forces.”
Emphasising that the action was disciplinary and internal in nature, Brig Gen Gusau reiterated the Armed Forces’ commitment to constitutional duty and internal cohesion.
“The Armed Forces wishes to assure the general public that these actions are strictly disciplinary in nature and part of routine efforts to maintain order, discipline, and loyalty within the ranks,” he said.
“The Armed Forces will not tolerate behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority. The Armed Forces of Nigeria remains fully committed to its constitutional responsibilities and will remain professional at all times,” the statement concluded.
The development underscores the military’s ongoing emphasis on discipline and professional conduct amid efforts to maintain operational readiness and uphold its democratic mandate.
