Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has inspected the agency’s Contact Centre and the newly established Trigger Room at its headquarters in Abuja as part of efforts to improve emergency response and disaster coordination across Nigeria.
The inspection focused on assessing the readiness of the Contact Centre, which receives emergency alerts from the public, and reviewing the progress of work on the Trigger Room, a new operational facility expected to improve coordination among emergency responders.
During the visit, Umar examined how emergency information is received, processed and escalated for immediate action. She also reviewed the systems and personnel handling public distress calls to ensure they are prepared to respond quickly to emergencies.
The NEMA boss said effective disaster management depends on the timely receipt of credible information and the ability of relevant agencies to act without delay.
She stressed the need for smooth communication between the Contact Centre, the Trigger Room, the Emergency Operations Centre and other operational units of the agency, noting that stronger coordination would help reduce response time during emergencies.
According to her, the Trigger Room is being developed to improve collaboration among government agencies and other emergency stakeholders, making it easier to deploy personnel and resources whenever disasters occur.
The inspection reflects NEMA’s ongoing efforts to modernise its emergency response system through improved technology, better information management and stronger inter-agency cooperation.
NEMA is the federal agency responsible for coordinating disaster management and emergency response in Nigeria. The agency works with state emergency management agencies, security organisations, health authorities and humanitarian partners to respond to floods, building collapses, road accidents, fire outbreaks and other emergencies. The establishment of the Trigger Room is expected to strengthen real-time coordination and improve the speed and effectiveness of emergency operations nationwide.
