Nigerian Army has opened an investigation into an allegation of sexual abuse involving a serving officer, Captain Etim Essien, attached to Headquarters 3 Division, Jos.
The Army said it became aware of reports circulating online about the allegation and had taken steps to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the reported incident.
It said allegations of sexual abuse are treated with utmost seriousness, particularly those involving minors and other vulnerable persons.
However, the Army cautioned against making conclusions about the culpability of any individual while the investigation is ongoing.
According to the Army, the investigation will be guided by due process and fairness, with the rights and dignity of all parties involved protected.
The Army also said relevant civil authorities are looking into the matter and assured that it would cooperate fully with them to ensure the allegation is thoroughly and transparently investigated in line with existing laws and regulations.
