Nigerian Army troops have seized 242 bags of NPK fertilizer suspected of being redirected for use in manufacturing Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) by terrorists in Borno, disrupting a critical supply chain for insurgents.
A reliable source from Army Headquarters, speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday, confirmed the operation, highlighting the military’s proactive efforts.
“Our troops remain vigilant in cutting off logistics that fuel terrorist activities,” the source stated.
On Wednesday, soldiers from the 151 Task Force Battalion at Banki Junction in Bama Local Government Area intercepted a truck carrying 142 bags of NPK 20-10-10 fertilizer. Initially approved for delivery to Mbalala ward in Chibok LGA, the consignment was suspiciously rerouted through Bama toward Askira-Uba, raising concerns of terrorist involvement.
In a separate operation, troops from the 21 Military Intelligence Regiment, working with the 21 Provost Company, intercepted another truck in Banki carrying 100 bags of NPK 20-10-10 fertilizer, 79 bags of maize, and 21 bags of rice.
“The fertilizer was not listed on the waybill, and the driver claimed ignorance, stating he was only paid to deliver it,” the source revealed. Both suspects and seized items are now under investigation.
The source emphasized the national security threat posed by fertilizer diversion, noting, “Insurgents exploit these materials to create deadly IEDs.”
The army remains committed to disrupting such supply chains and urged transporters, merchants, and residents to avoid supporting criminal networks.
Additionally, troops in the region neutralized two IEDs planted along Mafa–Ajiri road in Mafa LGA and repelled coordinated ISWAP/JAS attacks on military posts in Bama on Thursday. Three civilians injured during the assault were promptly evacuated to a hospital in Banki for treatment.
“Our forces, in collaboration with other security agencies, will continue operations to safeguard citizens and prevent terrorists from accessing vital resources,” the source affirmed, underscoring the military’s resolve to maintain security in the region.
