2027 NDC Presidential candidate, Peter Obi
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged Nigerian youths to channel the same passion they devote to European football into active participation in the country’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general election.
In a post shared on his social media platforms on Saturday, Obi argued that Nigeria possesses the talent needed to compete with the world’s best in football but lacks the quality of governance required to create an environment where such talent can thrive.
Using the popularity of European football as a reference point, the former Anambra State governor said the success of top football leagues is built on effective leadership, functional institutions and accountability rather than talent alone.
He noted that Nigerian players have consistently excelled abroad because they operate in systems that reward merit, invest in infrastructure and provide security and opportunities for growth.
According to Obi, good governance remains the foundation upon which thriving sports industries and prosperous nations are built.
As part of his engagement with young Nigerians, Obi disclosed plans to spend the next 150 days interacting with youths in different settings, including town hall meetings, tertiary institutions, online platforms and football communities, with the aim of encouraging greater political participation.
He stressed that the 2027 presidential election presents an opportunity for Nigerian youths to shape the country’s future by electing leaders capable of transforming Nigeria.
Obi also painted a picture of a country where local football leagues are competitive, stadiums are vibrant, clubs attract investment, coaches receive quality training and young footballers can build successful careers without leaving the country.
He maintained that achieving such a future depends on the choices Nigerians make at the ballot box.
“This weekend, Europe comes alive again with football. Millions of Nigerian youths will be glued to television screens, streaming matches, debating tactics, celebrating victories, and admiring the organisation, discipline, and excellence that make European football the envy of the world. But here is a question worth asking: Why can’t Nigerian football be just as good?” Obi wrote.
He added: “The answer is not a lack of talent. Nigeria has produced world-class footballers who have excelled in Europe because they found systems that reward merit, invest in infrastructure, ensure security, and are governed with competence and accountability. Great football does not exist in isolation. It grows where there is good governance.”
Calling on young Nigerians to become more involved in the nation’s political future, Obi said: “The future you admire in Europe can be built in Nigeria. But it starts with your vote.”
He further urged them to remain committed to the democratic process, declaring: “Stand up. Mobilise. Vote. Defend your vote.”
Obi concluded by expressing confidence that Nigeria can attain world-class standards through responsible leadership and active citizen participation.
“The journey towards better Nigerian football begins with the path to good governance. And the path to good governance begins with the decision of Nigerian youths to stand up and be counted in 2027.”
He ended the message with the words: “It’s in your hands, and that new Nigeria is POssible.”
