Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has assured residents of Igbokoda in Ondo State that it is taking their environmental and health concerns seriously following the recent military aircraft accident in the area.
The assurance came in a statement on Thursday by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.
The NAF said it was aware of reports by residents about an offensive odour and fears that the crash might have affected the environment.
It acknowledged the anxiety, discomfort and uncertainty being experienced by members of the community and assured them that their concerns would not be ignored.
According to the statement, search and recovery operations at the crash site are still ongoing in collaboration with relevant partner agencies.
The Air Force explained that after the recovery of the wreckage is completed, it will work with environmental, public health and other relevant authorities to assess the situation.
It said the assessment would help determine whether there are any environmental issues that require immediate attention and ensure appropriate action is taken.
The NAF said, “The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) acknowledges the concerns expressed by residents of Igbokoda, Ondo State, particularly reports of an offensive odour and fears of possible environmental impact following the aircraft accident.”
The statement added, “The NAF recognises the discomfort, anxiety and uncertainty such circumstances may cause and assures the affected community that their concerns are being taken seriously.”
The Air Force also stated, “Upon completion of the recovery operation, the NAF will engage with the appropriate environmental and public health authorities and other relevant agencies to assess the situation and coordinate appropriate action to address any identified environmental concerns.”
It further stressed that the wellbeing of the affected community remains important and pledged to continue engaging relevant stakeholders to protect public health, safety and the environment.
The latest assurance comes days after a Nigerian Air Force aircraft crashed near Igbokoda during an operational mission. Search and recovery efforts have continued since the incident, while authorities are also expected to investigate the cause of the crash.
