Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) has intensified its crackdown on cybercrime, arresting suspected romance scammers, a fake Commissioner of Police, a property fraudster and other individuals linked to technology-enabled crimes.
The Centre disclosed that its latest operations uncovered a range of cyber-related offences, including romance scams, property fraud and police impersonation, as part of ongoing efforts to combat cybercriminal activities across the country.
In the course of the investigations, operatives also recovered more than 12.5 million victim email logs connected to cybercrime cases spanning over 50 countries, highlighting the increasingly transnational nature of cybercrime.
The NPF-NCCC warned Nigerians to remain vigilant against fake investment platforms being promoted on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, noting that fraudsters continue to exploit digital platforms to deceive unsuspecting victims.
According to the Centre, its enhanced capabilities in digital forensics, open-source intelligence, financial investigations, network analysis and cryptocurrency tracing have significantly strengthened its ability to detect, investigate and dismantle increasingly sophisticated cybercrime networks.
The Centre, further, stressed that tackling transnational cybercrime requires sustained international collaboration, emphasizing the importance of information-sharing through the Budapest Convention framework to improve cross-border investigations and enforcement.
The Nigeria Police reiterated its commitment to strengthening cybercrime enforcement and urged members of the public to exercise caution when engaging in online financial transactions and investment opportunities.
