Super Eagles player, Taiwo Awoniyi
Taiwo Awoniyi has been called up to the Super Eagles squad to replace Victor Osimhen for Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.
Osimhen has been ruled out after failing to recover in time from a muscle injury, opening the door for Awoniyi to return to the national team.
The Coventry City striker has been away from the Super Eagles for almost two years, with his last appearance coming in October 2024 during Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Libya in an AFCON qualifier.
Awoniyi’s return gives him another chance to force his way back into the national-team picture after missing the 2025 AFCON and Nigeria’s recent friendly matches.
The 29-year-old has already featured for Coventry this season and scored in the club’s 4-2 League Cup victory over Plymouth Argyle in August.
Awoniyi will now compete for a place in Chelle’s attack as Nigeria prepare to begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Super Eagles will face Madagascar in Uyo on Friday, September 25, before travelling to Bissau to take on Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
