All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a scathing attack on the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing the opposition party of engineering its own internal crisis while rejecting claims that the ruling party is working to destabilise it.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the ruling party described the ADC as “an assembly of Nigeria’s most confused and desperate politicians,” alleging that the party has resorted to spreading conspiracy theories about the APC’s involvement in its internal troubles.
“Quite apart from being an assembly of Nigeria’s most confused and desperate politicians, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has distinguished itself as a peddler of rabid conspiracy theories about what the All Progressives Congress (APC) is or is not doing to undermine the party,” the statement read.
The APC further argued that the crisis rocking the ADC was self-inflicted, insisting that the party had been unstable from its formation. According to the ruling party, the opposition group was “a party that never was,” describing it as “a kamikaze contraption” that was bound to collapse.
“The ADC is a party that never was. By design, it was a kamikaze contraption with a ‘follow-come’ self-destructive detonator. It had to unravel and now unraveling fast by installment,” Morka stated.
The ruling party also criticised the emergence of the factional leadership under former Senate President David Mark and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, claiming their entry into the party violated constitutional provisions and triggered the current leadership dispute.
“When it’s factional leadership under the duo of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola parachuted into the party like thoughtless and planless commandos, and hijacked the party in violent violation of its constitutional stipulations regarding leadership succession, and in disregard of the rule of law, the ADC set its own date with destiny,” the APC said.
The APC maintained that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s decision to de-recognise the David Mark-led faction followed due legal process and should not be blamed on external interference.
“The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC’s) decision to de-recognize the factional David Mark-led executives in compliance with judgment of court, is valid in law, justified in fact, and consistent with electoral policy and democratic practice. It is the consequence of the Party’s reckless and desperate misadventure,” the statement added.
The ruling party described ADC’s allegations against it as “escapist and irresponsible,” insisting that the opposition party must accept responsibility for its internal challenges.
“It is therefore highly escapist and irresponsible for the ADC to blame the APC for its internal woes of which they are the sole architects,” APC stated.
The party further questioned ADC’s capacity to govern, arguing that a party struggling with internal cohesion cannot offer credible leadership to Nigerians.
“The ADC’s unwillingness to take responsibility for its miserable failure to follow due process, order its internal affairs, and manage its self-inflicted crisis makes ADC grossly unfit as platform to be taken seriously by Nigerians. A party that cannot fix itself cannot possibly fix Nigeria.”
Continuing, the APC accused the ADC of lacking policy direction and focusing solely on attacking the ruling party.
“The ADC has absolutely nothing to offer more than its senseless attacks against the APC. Attacking the APC seems to be its cardinal commitment and manifesto. It is a party bereft of ideas and lost in vain desperation for power.”
The APC reaffirmed its commitment to governance under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the administration remains focused on delivering its agenda for Nigerians.
“Our great Party and the administration of President Bola Tinubu remain steadfast in delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda, and strengthening democratic institutions for peace, unity and prosperity of all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
