Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Wednesday visited the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja to commiserate with the leadership of the labour movement over the death of its General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja.
Obi, who was received by the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, described Ugboaja’s death as a painful loss, saying the late labour leader dedicated his life to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian workers.
Speaking after the visit, Obi said the news of Ugboaja’s passing came as a shock to him.
“Today, I visited the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja to condole with the leadership, led by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, over the painful loss of the NLC General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, Esq.”
He added: “The news of Comrade Emmanuel’s passing came to me as a rude shock. He was a good friend, a gentleman, and a principled advocate for the rights, dignity, and welfare of Nigerian workers.”
Reflecting on the late labour leader’s contributions, Obi said Ugboaja remained steadfast in his commitment to the labour movement and left behind a legacy that would continue to inspire future generations.
“His commitment to the labour movement and his unwavering belief in the cause of workers made him a remarkable man. He lived a life of service, and his contributions to the labour movement will remain part of his enduring legacy,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor noted that although Ugboaja’s death was a painful loss, there was comfort in knowing that he lived a life devoted to service and the pursuit of a noble cause.
“I am consoled by the knowledge that Comrade Emmanuel lived an exemplary life and dedicated himself to a cause greater than himself. His legacy of service, courage, and commitment will continue to inspire the younger generation.”
Obi also extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues and the entire labour community, assuring them of his thoughts and prayers during the period of mourning.
“At this difficult moment, my thoughts and prayers are with his family, colleagues, friends, the entire NLC family, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
He prayed for strength for the bereaved family and eternal rest for the late labour leader.
“May God Almighty grant his family the strength and fortitude to bear this painful loss, and may He grant Comrade Emmanuel eternal rest.”
