Plateau State is notorious for violent attacks by bandits and armed militia
Plateau State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state as part of measures to prevent the spread of suspected diphtheria cases.
The directive, which takes effect on Monday, September 7, 2026, follows reports of suspected diphtheria cases in Jos North, Wase, Jos South and Bassa Local Government Areas.
According to the statement issued on Saturday by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap, the decision was taken as a preventive measure to protect pupils, students and school personnel from the suspected infection.
The statement said schools that had already resumed academic activities were also directed to close from Monday and remain shut until further notice.
It added that school proprietors, administrators, teachers, parents and guardians were expected to comply fully with the directive and ensure that pupils and students remained safely at home throughout the period.
According to the statement, the measure was aimed at ensuring “the safety and wellbeing of pupils, students, teaching and non-teaching staff during the period under review.”
The government urged all stakeholders to cooperate with the directive as it continues to take measures in the best interest of residents.
It said further information on the resumption of academic activities would be communicated to the public in due course.
The directive effectively suspends academic activities in all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state until the government considers it safe for schools to reopen.
