MTN Nigeria has urged subscribers to adjust their phone settings to reduce unnecessary data consumption and make their data bundles last longer.
The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, gave the advice on Monday during the “Data on Trial” event in Abuja, organised to address public concerns over data usage and pricing.
Toriola said many phone settings, automatic downloads and online activities contributed to rapid data depletion, urging customers to understand how their devices consume data.
He explained that the cost of providing telecom services in Nigeria remained high because operators funded electricity, transportation and other infrastructure needed to keep network sites running.
According to him, Nigerian telecom operators use the same 4G and 5G technologies as those in Europe and the United States but face much higher operating costs.
Also speaking, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Communications, Peter Akpatason, said the initiative would help consumers better understand data management and clear misconceptions about data pricing.
MTN’s General Manager, Network Performance and Quality Assurance, Mike Ndukwe, identified video streaming, TikTok, WhatsApp media downloads, social media activities and automatic app updates as major causes of fast data consumption.
He advised subscribers to disable automatic downloads, reduce video quality, enable data-saving features, restrict background data usage and use the MyMTN app to monitor their data usage in real time.
