The 6 Senatorial and 9 State House of Assembly bye-elections slated to
hold on October 31 in 11 states of the Federation has been postponed
by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The vacancies
were as a result of death and resignation of previous members.
According to the statement issued by its National Commissioner &
Chairman, Information and Voter Education, Festus Okoye Esq., INEC
said the decision was taken after meeting with the 37 Resident
Electoral Commissioners (RECs) on Thursday.
It would be recalled that INEC through the National commissioner
Festus Okoye had on Wednesday announced its intention to meet with the
37 Resident Electoral Commissioners on the way forward from the
escalating security situation in the country.
In a statement by the National commissioner and Chairman information
and Voter Education of the commission Festus Okoye, said, “Public
would recall that INEC scheduled the conduct of by elections in 15
constituencies in 11 states for 31st October 2020”.

According to the statement, the vacancies were as a result of death
and resignation of previous members adding that the commission has
been engage in meticulous preparation for the by elections for
several weeks in its determination to continue to deliver free, fair
credible elections for Nigerians.
The statement reads: “the commission is not oblivious of the current
mood of the nation, the security situation, natural disasters and
other emergencies reported in parts of the country. Indeed the
commission has been monitoring these situations regarding their
possible impact on the smooth conducts of the bye elections”
