The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has said that the bill to incorporate the children’s rights law is almost ready for his assent to become law in the state.
He made this known during an interaction with Ms Ulla Mueller, the country’s representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and Woo Chan Chang, the country’s Director of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA ), who paid him a courtesy call in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
The governor said: “The Child Rights Bill is almost ready for my assent, and we are working on the Prohibition of Violence Against Persons Act (VAPP).
“We have gray areas, but we are able to make all the necessary arrangements to ensure the swift passage of the VAPP law”.
“I had a discussion with the state attorney general and the justice commissioner on the matter yesterday,” Zulum said.
Governor Zulum also said the state government is doing everything possible to provide access to justice for survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
He explained that the justice commissioner was already ready to deliver justice to survivors of gender-based violence.
Previously, the UNFPA country representative urged the governor to prioritize the passage of the VAPP law.
She said that “this important piece of legislation will help protect the rights of women, who are primarily affected, as current data shows, and bring perpetrators to justice as well.”
