Sokoto State in North West Nigeria is notorious for kidnapping and banditry
Hundreds of defenseless residents from multiple villages in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State have abandoned their homes, seeking safety after a brutal bandit attack, local authorities and residents confirmed.
The assault has sparked fears of a looming humanitarian crisis, according to the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
The mass displacement has affected villages including Tungar-Barke, Lungu, Aske-Dodo, Tungar-Doruwa, Zango, ‘Yan Yandu, Tungar Na’anza, and Ila.
On Friday, SEMA and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) conducted a joint assessment at a temporary Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp at the 30 Houses Estate in Shagari town, meeting with community leaders from the affected areas.
Among those consulted were Hakimin ‘Yan Dundaji, Malam Muhammad Bello Magaji, and Maigarin Tungar-Barke, Muhammadu Tudu, who reported that the attack, which occurred three days prior, forced residents from numerous villages to flee.
Visibly anguished, the displaced locals pleaded for urgent government intervention, particularly enhanced security, to allow them to return safely to their homes and resume farming.
Recounting the horrific ordeal, one villager described the bandits as “demons incarnate,” highlighting the terror inflicted during the attack.
