A Court of Appeal in Cotonou, Benin Republic has ordered that Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, should be remanded in a detention facilitiy pending investigations.
The court gave the ruling late Monday night
Earlier in the day, security personnels brought Igboho into the court premises, as early as 7am Monday to avoid interference.
The activist spent over 15 hours in the prosecutor office, where it was deliberated whether to release or further detain him.
After long hours, the prosecutors decided to further detain the activist without giving any reason for their action.
Many Yoruba agitators and supporters had come to show solidarity to the activist. Some wore solidarity uniform, together with various traditional leaders, who also wore their own regalia.
Many of the supporters had to wait for long as the court proceeding lasted for hours.
Due to the tension in area, the court president invited policemen to chase the journalists and supporters of Sunday Igboho from the court premises.
Recalled that Sunday Igboho and his wife had appeared before the Court of Appeal in Cotonou on Friday. The court freed the activist’s wife after they found nothing against her.
He was arrested while trying to travel to Germany from Cotonou airport last Monday. The Cotonou authority had detained him and commenced an investigation into the case filed by the Nigeria Governments, alleging that he committed a crime and ran away.
His arrest happened last week, after the Nigeria secret police, DSS raided Igboho’s house in Ibadan. The DSS could not arrest him and he was declared wanted.
