Lagos State Police Command has successfully reestablished order on the 3rd Mainland Bridge after a demonstration by Oworo residents disrupted traffic on Monday.
The protest, sparked by local demolitions, saw residents block the bridge near Iyana Oworo Bus Stop, halting movement from the Island to the Mainland.
This is contained in a statement issued by the command’s deputy spokesperson, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, on Monday in Lagos.
He said “The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, promptly arrived at the scene with Mobile Police Force, Tactical Units, and Police Mobile Force personnel to engage with the protesters and ensure the safety of lives and property.”
Oluseyi noted that CP Jimoh personally attempted to address the protesters’ concerns and urged them to clear the bridge.
“Despite his appeals, the protesters remained adamant, causing prolonged disruption and distress to commuters, including those needing urgent medical care,” he added.
When dialogue failed, CP Jimoh authorized minimal force to disperse the crowd, remove barricades, and restore traffic flow.
“The operation was conducted without any loss of life, ensuring the bridge was fully reopened,” Oluseyi confirmed.
The police command emphasized its commitment to neutrality and public safety, urging residents to pursue lawful avenues for grievances.
“The Lagos State Police remain dedicated to protecting the rights of all citizens while maintaining peace and order,” Oluseyi stated.
