Nigerian Navy has taken a basic but significant need to the heart of Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State, commissioning three solar-powered boreholes as part of a new water supply project for the community.
The intervention comes with more than the boreholes themselves. The Navy also provided an 11-metre tank tower, a 52,000-litre water storage tank, a control room and a security guard room, creating a complete water supply system rather than leaving the community with standalone pumping points.
The facilities were delivered under the Chief of Naval Staff Special Intervention Quick Impact Projects Scheme and executed in honour of retired Rear Admiral Aliyu Ahmad Gaya.
At the commissioning, the Navy stressed that keeping the project working will now require the involvement of the people it was built to serve.
Representing the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, the Chief of Naval Assessment, Safety and Standards, Rear Admiral Pakiribo Solomon Angbraba, urged the beneficiaries to take ownership of the facilities and ensure they are properly maintained.
That message puts the focus beyond the commissioning ceremony. With the boreholes powered by solar energy and water stored in a 52,000-litre tank, the project has the infrastructure to provide sustained access to potable water, but its long-term value will depend on how well the facilities are managed.
The intervention also carries a strong connection to the naval community. By naming the project in honour of Rear Admiral Gaya, the Navy has tied the provision of basic infrastructure in the Kano community to the legacy of one of its retired senior officers.
For Gaya, the immediate gain is straightforward: three new boreholes, backed by substantial storage capacity and a dedicated support structure, have been added to the community’s water supply system.
And for the Navy, the project offers another example of its Chief of Naval Staff’s Special Intervention Quick Impact Projects being used to deliver infrastructure with a direct impact on civilian communities.
